WHAT IS IRMS?
- Recruitment to Indian Railways for Group-A Cadre will be done through a specially designed examination that is Indian Railway Management services (IRMS Examination).
- Examination will be conducted by the APEX BODY UPSC(examination conducting Body) from the year 2023 onwards.
- Indian Railway Board in Consultation with UPSC & DOPT has shown the intent of Hiring 150 Candidates for Group-A positions in Indian Railways for 2023 Examination.
IRMS EXAM PATTERN
- The IRMSE will be a two-tier examination- a Preliminary Screening Examination, followed by a Main Written Examination and Interview,where For screening the suitable number of candidates for the 2nd stage of the Examination that is IRMS (Main) Written Examination, all eligible candidates shall be required to appear in Civil Services(Preliminary) Examination and suitable number of candidates will be screened for IRMS (Main)Examination.
The IRMS (Main) Examination will consist of 4 papers of conventional essay type in the subjects set out below:

LIST OF OPTIONAL SUBJECTS FOR IRMS(MAINS)
List of optional subjects from which a candidate is to choose only one optional subject:
(i) Civil Engineering,
(ii) Mechanical Engineering
(iii) Electrical Engineering
(iv) Commerce and Accountancy
SYLLABUS OF IRMS EXAM
- The IRMS & CSE Prelims is Common,Therefore Syllabus of CSE{prelims) Will be the Syllabus of IRMS,but the Merit list of qualified candidates for Irms(mains} & CSE(Mains) will be Different.
- The IRMS & CSE Aspirants,if Appear for Mains with the subjects from above lists,Then He/she is not supposed to write the Mains exam Separately for both Exams with the same optional subject.
- The IRMS{mains) Language Paper is Qualifying in nature as like in CSE(mains),So the syllabus of the language paper of CSE{Civil services} will be the Syllabus of IRMS(mains) language paper.
- The IRMS(mains) optional paper from the above list has the same syllabus of civil services optional subjects for Mains.
- The language medium and scripts for the qualifying papers and optional subjects (for question papers and writing answers) will be the same as those for the CSE (Main) Examination.
AGE LIMIT AND NUMBER OF ATTEMPT
Candidates must be a minimum of 21 years of age and must not be more than 32 years of age as on 1 August of that Specific year of Examination with maximum 6 attempts.
The Candidates Can avails the Age limit Relaxation and No of Attempt Relaxation in the following
cases:-
- (a) General Category & EWS: 32 years; 6 attempts.
- (b) OBC (with certificate): 32 years + 3 years; 9 attempts.
- (c) SC/ST: 32 years + 5 years; unlimited attempts.
- (d) Physically Disabled: 32 years + 10 years; Gen/OBC/Person with Benchmark Disability(EWS category)- 9 attempts & SC/ST unlimited attempts.
- (e) Jammu & Kashmir Domicile: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST); Number of attempts depends on the reserved category.
- (f) Disabled and discharged Defence service personnel: 32 years + 3 years + (3 years, if Gen/OBC OR 5 years, if SC/ST).
- (g) Ex-Servicemen Commission Officer: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST).

IRMS EXAM SCHEDULE
- As per the Annual Programme of the Examination of the UPPSC for the year 2023, the Civil Services (P) Examination – 2023 is scheduled to be notified and held on 01.02.2023 and 28.05.2023 respectively.
- Since the CSP Exam – 2023 will be utilized for screening the candidates for IRMS (Main) Examination also, the IRMS Examination -2023 will be notified following the same schedule.The language medium and scripts for the qualifying papers and optional subjects (for question papers and writing answers) will be same as those for the CSE (Main) Examination.
