Q.) What things motivated you to prepare for ESE and GATE ?
Ans) The idea to become an IES officer was already in my mind during my college days, But in 4th year I got campus placement offer from L&T construction, as it is one of the Best private sector company for Civil Engineers I was very happy and excited to join this company. But after working for7-8 months as a Site Engineer I realized that I deserve much better than this, and 4-15 hrs which I am spending at site I should invest this time in studies.
Q.) How did you start your preparation? Give a brief idea about it.
Ans) I have joined a Coaching Institute in Delhi for my preparation and just Followed the class notes and study material provided by the coaching.
Q.) What were the major challenges or hurdles in your preparation and how did you Overtook these challenges?
Ans ) I felt that the vast syllabus was a very big challenge as you have to keep all the Concepts and formulas in your fingertip. For that I use to revise each topic or subject Regularly within the interval of 20 days.
Q.)There are two main exam as we all know, GATE & ESE. All the students are confused Whether to target GATE or ESE alone or both simultaneously. So what will be your Advice to a student regarding this ?
Ans ) Both exams are very important, GATE gives you opportunity to get good PSUs and One can also pursue his/her Masters, so the choice is purely individuals. My main focus Was on ESE but whenever I get time I used to solve the GATE previous years paper also And planned to complete all the previous year paper before ESE prelims and then after The ESE prelims I focused on GATE test series.
Q. )What was your daily schedule during preparation?
Ans) As I had joined a coaching, I made sure to do following things on daily basis
1.Go through the topics taught in coaching classes.
2.Solve the problems of related topics from study material and ESE previous years.
3.Solve the GATE previous years of related topics.
4.Make a short note of the topic after solving the questions so that you get to know the Important concept and formulas which have been asked in previous years.
5.Revision of short notes.
Q.)How important is the revision in preparation and how did you plan it?
Ans)The most important part of any exam preparation is revision. One should plan his/her daily schedule keeping revision in mind. Make revision of short notes a habit during your preparation.
Q.)Test series is also a important part of preparation. When did you start attempting Test series for ESE prelims, GATE and ESE Mains?
Ans)I just followed the test series schedule of my coaching only. There is no need to Solve multiple test series. One is sufficient if you are doing it properly.
Q.)What are some of the common mistakes every students make during preparation?
And how should one tackle these mistakes?
Ans) some common mistakes are listed below
1. Students don’t make short notes and sometimes people make it but they don't revise It regularly.
2. Try to study continuously for long hours (around 3 hours )in a stretch so that you can Delevop your mindset and focus for 3hrs as normally all exams are of 3hr period.
3. Don’t try to master or do research on any topic, as we have to write an exam not thesis.
4. Covering 80% syllabus efficiently is sufficient don’t go for 100% unless you are not Very sure about that 80%.
5. Dont use calculator, as in prelims it is not allowed. Start doing calculations on your own, for fast calculations mug up some trick calculations which are being frequently used in numericals such as square root, cube root, π-square etc etc.
6. Planning is very important, make daily plan and weekly plan of your studies and make Sure that your plan achievable. And complete your backlog of previous week plan if any Before starting a new week plan.
Q.)What was your plan for ESE General studies?
Ans) I have Allotted one hour daily for GS paper, studied GS from class notes and gone Through the booklet provided from the coaching several times as GS is unpredictable And one can't rely on class notes only.
Q.)What is the difference in PSU or ESE interview? What things should one keep in mind During interview as we become little nervous during interview?
Ans) In PSU interviews apart from the HR questions they asked basic technical Questions which one can easily answer but in ESE interview they ask HR questions, Good technical questions, general awareness question mostly regarding your technical Subjects and for this one should prepare very seriously. And regarding the nervousness of the interview it is very natural. And I think little Nervousness is important as it show your seriousness for the interview and it makes You more focused during your interview.
Q.)Any other advice to future candidates?
Ans) Every one has its own reason that why they are preparing for the exam, just Remember your reasons it will always motivate you to study because motivational Videos work for 2-3 days only. And spend your time in study effectively as this time is very precious. I have always kept This sentence in my mind during my preparation that-"Itna padhlo ki agar unfortunately Exam na bhi clear ho tab bhi koi regret man me na rehe k yaar thoda aur padh lena tha."
